“You know The Mechanicals? That traveling troupe of satyrs? I founded them. We did classic Satyr fare — short-form improv, slapstick, toilet humor. It got to be a little too puerile for me. I longed to tell stories of a deeper nature. They couldn’t comprehend that, so we parted ways.”
🔪 The truth is Martineus was kicked out for being a “stick-in-the-mud.” He will never admit this.
🔪 Martineus hates that he has done nothing of note since leaving the Mechanicals, but not for lack of trying.
🔪 The Mechanicals have skyrocketed in popularity across Theros since Martineus left. He’s desperate to prove he’s doing just fine without his old friends.

The revel that Martineus met Xenagos at was an open mic. He completely bombed a standup routine and was trying to drink his sorrows away. The set he performed wasn’t just intended to be funny — it was biting satire, emotional introspection, and a call to action. The message confused the mostly-drunk audience, but Xenagos saw something in it.
🔪 Martineus wants to make things that MATTER, that inspire people. Xenagos is inviting him to make stories before he writes them.
Tenets are one big set of knives that come preloaded into a Paladin. This is how Martineus interprets the tenets of the Oath of Glory.
